Diploma in Teaching English to

Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The Diploma in TESOL course is suitable for those who are new to teaching English and who wish to develop their skills in teaching students who are speakers of other languages. The programme will give the trainee teacher an introduction to the theory and practice of English teaching. TESOL provides an insight into the challenges facing the learner and the role of the teacher in the classroom. Teaching methodologies, techniques to develop language skills, phonology and morphology, the study of English grammar, lesson planning, plus the different learning styles and testing will be included. The practical aspect includes lesson observation and guided teaching practice.

Requirements

At least 18 Years of age
GCE ‘O’ Levels with a credit in English or equivalent

For Foreign students, a high school qualification and a IELTS score of 6.5 is required

If you do not fall within the above categories but are interested, please summit all your qualifications and a letter explaining why you should be considered. You may be asked to undergo a written English proficiency test and attend an interview. Your application will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Assessments

Open book course assignments to be submitted to The London Teacher Training College in the U.K. where they will be assessed and graded by two examiners.

There will be a practical teaching assignment that the student will have to present to students.

Duration

This is a 100-hour course. It normally takes 5 months to complete the course if one does it twice a week. However, if one does it three times a week, one should finish it in 3.5 months.

We have different modes of learning, depending on the student's preference. We run online, blended and physical classes, and we will cater to the needs of the student.

We are very flexible.

Class Size

The maximum class size is five students. The teacher/student ratio will never be more than 1:5.

Module 1 (Language Theory)

  • The nature of language and its acquisition.

  • Language teaching principles and methodologies.

Module 2 (Language Teaching Methodology)

  • Teaching language skills.

  • Teaching materials and aids.

Module 3 (Classroom Planning and Organisation)

  • The Syllabus and Scheme of Work

  • Teacher’s Role

  • Different Types of Learners

  • Organising the class

  • Lesson Planning

Module 4 (Linguistics & Language Teaching)

  • Phonetics and Phonology

  • Grammar, Morphology and Syntax

  • Error Analysis in Writing

Students get classroom teaching experience. They are trained to prepare lesson plans on all four skills, as well as to teach grammar and pronunciation. The instructor will evaluate students’ lesson plans and classroom teaching and the marks obtained will go into their final grading.

Fees are paid in instalments according to module completion:

TOTAL: S$2600

 

Note: The fee collected at Module 1 includes a S$100 registration fee.
